Traveling the back roads of California’s Central Valley for the past two decades has opened my eyes to interesting people, places, history, and legends.

Thanks to the Our Community Story column on MercedCountyEvents.com and four books on California, I have brought some of these stories to you now approaching a decade and a half.

My newest book is Jack & Johnny (lulu.com). It is about the two comedians, both having lived in California throughout most of their broadcasting careers and their mentoring friendship of two decades.

Four books in the California Series include stories about my travels.

BEATEN PATHS AND BACK ROADS (lulu.com) Published in 2023, offers a new perspective on such iconic locations as Yosemite National Park, the Motherlode region better known as Gold Country, the remarkable agricultural bounty in the Central Valley, and the challenges wildfires bring to first responders.

California Back Roads- Stories from the Land of the Palm and the Pine (lulu.com)-Stories from the Land of the Palm and the Pine play off the palm and pine tree in the Highway 99 median south of Madera. Published in 2020, this book introduces the reader to unique places all over the state.

Can Do Californians (With Bonus Essay: Uncle Bill's California) (lulu.com) profiles people who have made life in California enjoyable. The book includes three dozen stories about real people, from the well-known, such as evangelist Billy Graham or Buck Owens, to the lesser-known citizens making a difference.

9 From 99 w/new afterword (lulu.com) is an experience-driven travel journey exploring nine locations on the historic highway 99 from Bakersfield to Stockton. It was published in 2000.

I grew up in New York State. I got my degree in communications and was a television journalist for fifteen years. After working as a chamber of commerce executive for thirteen years, I finished my working career with a public utility where I managed government energy efficiency programs for thirteen years.

Three books recall my youth. Growing Up, Upstate-Memories of the 60's & 70's (with new author notes) (lulu.com) is a memoir of the sixties and seventies when my family of five enjoyed a good life in northern New York State.

That book was followed by Grown Up, Going Home (lulu.com), a collection of memories from that same period not previously covered in the first book. In 2020, the two books were combined with more new stories from that period in A BUNDLE OF MEMORIES (lulu.com).

A short work of non-fiction called Finding Bill. Finding Bill - A Nephew’s Search for Meaning in his Uncle’s Life and Death (lulu.com) details my journey to learn more about my Uncle Bill from his fellow soldiers in Vietnam.

Two books recalled my early days as a professional journalist.

Stand By, Camera One (lulu.com) is the story of my first job as a television journalist forty-five years ago in 1979 and 1980. It is about significant personal changes, such as starting the first job, becoming engaged, getting married, and meeting a friend who would change my life.

ROCKET REPORTER (lulu.com) came out in 2023. It tells the true story of my second job working in television news. It is about Huntsville, Alabama, and the Space Shuttle program when NASA was preparing for the very first launch of Columbia.

The remaining books run the gamut of fiction, self-help, and golf topics.

My first fictional work was Ten Minutes to Air (lulu.com). It is about a former television journalist who is framed for murder and becomes a reluctant private detective to clear his name.

Sign On at Sunrise is fiction about a college student working at a radio station while attending school in the mid-1970s.

Go Where You're Needed (lulu.com) is a fictional short story with a holiday season theme.

My self-help book Soft Skills for Hard Times (new forward-Teens in the 20-Teens) (lulu.com) takes my work experiences and turns them into learning examples for people looking for a competitive edge in work and success in life. This book has been used as a source for my talk for the Love Plus life skills program sponsored by Love INC of Merced.

Course Corrections-My Golf Truth, Fiction, & Philosophy (lulu.com) is about my passion for golf. I include true stories about friends, short stories with a golf theme, and some introspection on what the game has meant to me.

The writing process comes up when speaking about these books to service clubs and historical organizations. Every author finds a method that works for that particular individual.

I usually write one book a year. My process includes outlining my proposed book at the beginning of the year, writing daily for at least six months, and then editing the manuscript for another four months.

Service groups such as Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, and the Merced Women’s Club have invited me to discuss my writing.

I enjoy these visits, and I appreciate the invitations.

If your group is interested in one of my talks, you can contact me via private message on the Facebook page Can-Do Californians
